There is currently no cure for EDS and usually the doctors can prescribe various orthopedic devices to help support the hyper mobile joints. Also, one diagnosed with EDS may need to reduce or eliminate the activities that cause joints to over extend or lock in occasions.

There are several different classifications to EDS (from Wikipedia)

Name

Number

Description

OMIM

Hypermobility

type 3

Affects 1 in 10,000 to 15,000 and is caused by an autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive mechanism. Mutations in either of two separate genes (which are also involved in Vascular EDS and Tenascin-X deficiency EDS, respectively) may lead to this variant. Extreme flexibility is the hallmark of this type.

Classical

types 1 & 2

It is caused by autosomal dominant mechanism and affects type-V collagen, as well as type I. Type 1 typically presents with severe skin involvement, and type 2 presents with mild to moderate skin involvement.

Vascular

type 4

Is an autosomal dominant defect in the type-III collagen synthesis; affecting approximately 1 in 100,000 to 250,000 people. The vascular type is considered one of the more serious forms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome because blood vessels and organs are more prone to tearing (rupture). Patients with EDS type 4 often express a characteristic facial appearance (large eyes, small chin, thin nose and lips, lobeless ears), have a small stature with a slim build, and typically have thin, pale, translucent skin (veins can usually be seen on the chest and abdomen). About one in four people with vascular type EDS develop a significant health problem by age 20 and more than 80 percent develop life-threatening complications by age 40.

For some reason, people are requesting information on decibel levels all over the place.
So here is some information on what it really is.

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia decibel level is

The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit of measurement that expresses the magnitude of a physical quantity (usually power or intensity) relative to a specified or implied reference level. Since it expresses a ratio of two quantities with the same unit, it is a dimensionless unit. A decibel is one tenth of a bel, a seldom-used unit.

The decibel is widely known as a measure of sound pressure level, but is also used for a wide variety of other measurements in science and engineering (particularly acoustics, electronics, and control theory) and other disciplines. It confers a number of advantages, such as the ability to conveniently represent very large or small numbers, a logarithmic scaling that roughly corresponds to the human perception of sound and light, and the ability to carry out multiplication of ratios by simple addition and subtraction.

And here is a common decibel chart

I am going to post up a sample meal plan for a dieter which is around 1200 calories.
If you can follow this for a month, you should be able to lose weight.
The only catch is that you can’t eat anything that goes out of the calorie limit for each meal.
Other than that you are free to substitute it with any food that you choose.
Just make sure that you keep it around the same calorie per meal/snack.

At least 75% of all diarrhea are caused by viruses and are “self-regulating”, meaning that your body will take care of the infection. This can take 3 to 9 days and the only thing to do is to take enough fluids to avoid dehydration. Be aware of the signs of dehydration (dry mouth, sunken eyes, and in small babies; a sunken fontanelle at the top of the head where the skull bones have not yet joined). If dehydration does occur, take Oral Rehydration Salt preparation. If fever occurs or there is blood in the stool, consult a doctor immediately.

Pepto-Bismol and Immodium can be dangerous for children (and adults) when taken for diarrhea that is caused by viral infections (such as Rotavirus or the flu). By stopping the diarrhea, you may actually be trapping the virus inside your body and causing prolonged illness. Consult your doctor before taking over the counter medicines!

Causes

Bacteria in food or protozoa in water are often the cause, but other causes can also include viruses and parasites.

Gasteroenteritis is commonly caused by a virus that has entered the digestive tract through contaminated water or food and can cause inflammation, cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Diarrhea can cause dehydration so make sure to hydrate yourself by taking Pedialyte for children and sport drinks for adults.

Eating an excessive amounts of fatty foods or fruit can also cause diarrhea, as well as extreme fatigue, stress, or anxiety.

One may also have underlying causes such as IBS (irritable bowl syndrome), or lactose intolerance.

What to do

Avoid caffeinated drinks, carbonated drinks, alcohol, cold drinks, and dairy products. Diarrhea can sometime produce temporary lactose intolerance.

There are various homeopathic cures available, however, consult a physician prior to trying them out!

Some tips from health911.com

Apple cider vinegar Try 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water with each meal and at mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and at bedtime. Another variation is to give children 2 teaspoons every two hours. This remedy can be used for children as young as three years of age. The vinegar acts as a natural antiseptic and helps cleanse the intestines and entire digestive tract. It also contains pectin which will add bulk to the stools. The pectin also is effective against certain types of bacteria that cause diarrhea.

Apples For some people apples cause stomach problems. For others they can be a cure. Grate an apple and let it stand at room temperature for several hours until well darkened. The oxidized pectin will help stop the diarrhea. Give children, especially babies, finely grated apples, followed by oatmeal porridge. Older children and adults can take oat flakes (or rolled oats) raw, chewing thoroughly, with nothing else to eat for a few hours.

Bee pollen Take bee pollen several times a day. It contains nearly all the minerals and trace elements needed in the diet.

Blackberry Put 1 teaspoon of allspice in a cheesecloth bag and simmer it in unsweetened blackberry juice for a few minutes. For children give them a teaspoonful every four hours. Larger doses for adults. Several tablespoons of fresh or frozen blackberries work well, too, as does blackberry juice or wine.

Black pepper and kelp This is a good remedy for diarrhea caused by unpurified water. Boil water and cool. Add 3 teaspoons of black pepper and 11/2 teaspoon of kelp to 2 cups of water. Repeat as often as necessary.

Blueberries A compound found in blueberries effectively fights the bacteria that causes most cases of diarrhea. Eating one cup of fresh blueberries should do the trick.

Bran Add one tablespoon of unprocessed bran daily to your diet. Don’t use the kind sold as breakfast cereal, as it has been processed. It can be taken with liquids or mixed with a variety of foods, depending on taste. It works because it absorbs eight times its own weight and will soak up the excess fluids in the intestines. Your stools should soon return to normal.

Carob flour/powder Carob flour is very rich in pectin, a binding substance, and tannins, which have an anti-viral effect, and is very helpful in normalizing bowels. Carob flour/powder is very beneficial for babies’ diarrhea. Mix with formula or food.

Carrots Boil carrots, then puree. Take 1 teaspoon every 15 minutes.

Carrot juice The essential oils in carrot juice have an effect on the mucous membranes in the stomach. Take juice several times daily to help regain proper digestion. The juice is good for children, too, and should stop diarrhea attacks quickly.

UK based Institute of Food Research has developed a revolutionary new product: a food additive based on oilve oil that will keep you feeling full for up to 12 hours.

The current product is consumed via mixed with milk shake, and it has been shown that the subjects felt full for up to 12 hours. The research is being continued to see if this additive will have the same affect on other foods as well. The researchers mixed a combination of olive oil, water, and Tween 60 or Span 80. Tween 60 and Span 80 are polysobates, a class of emulsifiers used in food preparation. Then they mixed it with coffee flavor and gave the shakes to 11 subjects and checked their satiety level every hour. The result was that the mixture that contained Tween 60 lasted longer in the stomach therefore giving feeling of satiety. This is based on a logic that although water is absorbed fast from the stomach, it remains longer in the stomach if it is mixed with oil.

Right now is a pretty stressing time for me, with all the finals coming in a few days and all, so I decided to make a quick post about some stress reducing food with some tips to help you stay up all night. If there is one thing that five years of college education that has taught me anything, it’s how to cram and stay up all night, whether it be to drink all night or study. Click to see more..

So, you know how you get those bags under your eyes after you stay up for a few days? That means your body used up vitamins in reserve and its showing up where your skins are thin, like under your eyes. So what do you do? You eat.

First item on the list is oranges, or you can substitute vitamin C pills instead. But pills don’t quite give you that refreshed boost so it’s up to you. Vitamin C not only reduces stress and return blood pressure and cortisol to normal level, but it also helps you to eradicate those free radicals floating around your body. So pop ‘em or peel ‘em. It’s up to you, but take ‘em.

Second is sweet potatoes. You know how you crave for food, or sweets in the middle of the night? It’s because your brain, surprisingly uses up a lot of calorie during intensive activity, such as studying or playing computer games really, really, hard.

Dried apricots have magnesium which relaxes muscles as well as reduces stress.

Various nuts, almonds, pistachios, and walnuts also reduce stress and boost immune system, as well as lower blood pressure.

Turkey has L-tryptophan which has calming effects as well as relatively low in fat and high in protein. This partially explains why you feel so tired/sleepy after you eat it. I don’t recommend it for staying up all night.

Spinach has tons of magnesium which reduces migraine headaches and relieves feeling of fatigue.

Salmon contains lot of omega-3 fatty acids that can reduce stress and aids against heart disease. It also keeps the cortisol level low.

Avocados are rich in monosaturated fat (the good fat) as well as potassium (more than bananas). It also reduces blood pressure.

FES2, WHAT IS IT?
FES2, also known as iron sulfide, has been found in the Chinese Drywalls of many newly built homes.
More than 100,000 homes built within the last 5 years said to have been affected by this compound.
The EPA is still working on identifying the homes that may contain these drywalls, but the reports so far have been coming all around the US, particularly around Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Virginia and North Carolina.

Many may have been trying to identify Fe2 using air sampling, but it has shown that it is not effective. (Via Webwire)

“The problem appears to be related to the presence of iron disulfide (FeS2 pyrite). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide, sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon disulfide (CS2) are also suspected as culprits. EMSL Analytical has recently developed a procedure that can accurately compare certain sulfur gasses contained in suspect drywall versus control samples.

Air sampling methods (such as EPA TO-15 and ASTM D5504) do not consistently identify spaces with other odorous drywall symptoms, such as odors, irritation, and copper corrosion. There are so many factors, including temperature, moisture, HVAC operation, etc., that affect what is present in the air that other sampling methods should be utilized. Bulk testing has proven to be the most reliable testing methods. EMSL can show that the material differs in composition from normal, non-problem drywall by XRF/XRD microscopy. This test alone may not tell the whole story.”

“You might have Chinese dry-stone wall in your home if you are feeling: Respiratory irritation, Irritated eyes, Persistent headaches, Nose bleeds, Wheezing, Coughing, Sneezing, Difficulty breathing. Or a different symptoms are alike to those of asthma attack, bronchitis, and another respiratory disorders.” via (hotbreakingnews.com)

You may have heard of Sciatica pain. But it is important to note that Sciatica Pain is not a specific symptom that focuses on a specific diagnosis. However, Sciatica pain refers to a general pain caused by compression of various different nerves that are either of or stems from the sciatic nerve in the lower back. Sciatica Pain is also known as radiculopathy.

www.eorthopod.com

For example a cervical radiculopathy refers to a compression or pinching of a nerve in your neck by various cervical spinal bones as pictured here. In our case, it the compression or pinch would be near the sciatic area.

Image from: Medine Plus

As you can see here, Sciatic Nerve stretches from the lower back to the back of the thigh and is present in each of the leg. If the Sciatic nerve is pinched you may experience burning, pinching, pain, numbness throughout the affected side of the leg.

Now, if you have Scitica pain, it is important to actively release the pressure impinged on the nerve. One way to do this is through exercise and stretching.
However, if you have moderate lumbosacral radicular pain (sciatica pain), you may want to just take a bed rest for two weeks. The absent time from work or school post surgical procedure is comparable to simply resting at home for two weeks and it has been found that 87% of both groups have comparable improvements.

If you would rather go into medication, there are epidural shots which you can take. These shots are very effective at relieving pain and inflammation, but if the underlying cause is not fixed, there is a high chance that the pain may return.

Along with other medical procedures (surgical or shots) as well as just resting, there are few exercises and stretches in which you can do at home to strengthen the core muscle and relieve pressure from the nerve.

I’m not a big fan of medicine. Especially when I have to take it. I imagine that nobody really likes to take medicine. I mean would you want to take medicine if you were healthy? no right? But when it comes to herbal medicine, it seems much more safer to use. So here are some natural herbal medicine aimed for alleviating back pain.

Devils Claw for Back Pain

This one is call Devil’s Claw. Wow that sounds really mean. Devil’s claw has been shown to alleviate some inflamation associated with back pain. However, one caveat is that this is a blood thinner. So if you are not to be on any kind of blood thinners, then I suggest you to skip this one.

Willow

This one is called Willows. This particular plant contains pain releaving ingredients and are a lot like aspirine. You can alleviate some back pain by making tea from willow bark, meadowsweet or wintergreen.

Peppers

Peppers are also good for back pain. Cayenne contains an ingredient called capsaicin. You can apply this topically. Buy red peppers, then rub on skin directly or mix with cold cream and rub on. Caveat: test on skin for any sensitivity, or any allergic reaction. always wash hands after.

For the next post, I’ll share with you some prevention and recovery exercises to ease you from backpain. Until then, I posted an older article regarding some exercise you can do here.
